Maximum Ways to Minimize Your Summer Skincare Routine

Are you overwhelmed by the amount of beauty and bath products taking up valuable space in your life? I admit it is easy to fill our spaces with items that promise to make us look and feel younger. But, unfortunately, searching for the perfect product leads to clutter, overspending, and frustration. But by simplifying, organizing, and creating functional systems that streamline your routine, you can avoid that unnecessary frustration.

Joining me this month is our expert skincare guru, Karen Oettl, Founder of Save Face, based in Atlanta. Karen will show us how to Maximum ways to minimize our skincare routine this summer, as well as share her favorite go-to skincare products.

Let's get started! Declutter. Categorize. Contain

Step1: Remove every item you own and group them into categories. Yes, everything!

Category examples:  Group by when you use them or by type of product.

  • Morning, evening, and occasional

  • Face, body, hair, nails, etc.

Step 2: Toss anything that looks old or products you never use. Remind yourself that these products only take up space for the items you *do* use.

Step 3: Now that you have pared down your products, choose storage solutions that make sense in your space.  The most crucial step here is to ensure that your daily products remain easily accessible. It helps to organize products by when you use them. For example, I have my morning products in one container, my evening ones in another, and my "use on the occasional basis" in another. This way, I stay on track with my routines. My favorite organizing products include Clear Acrylic Makeup & Skin Care Storage Kit and iDesign LazySusan.

Speaking of skincare routines, Karen Oettl shares her tips here:

Bright, hot weather & iced coffee-in-the-mornings are here. But, like most of us, once June & July hit, we're tossing our hairdryers in storage and wanting to minimize our skincare routines.

There are simple ways to ensure you're still taking excellent care of your skin without the added steps or the rich creams. Read on to check out our recommended routines for muggy summer days (and nights):

1) Prevent sun damage with a 2-in-1 SPF morning moisturizer every day. We're fans of SPF year-round, but it's critical in the summertime even if you won't be spending a ton of time outdoors. Then, save a step in the A.M. by using a multi-tasker SPF plus moisturizer like Image's Prevention SPF +50.

2) Fight Sunspots with a vitamin C serum in the A.M. Hyperpigmentation, or the overproduction of melanin in the skin by melanocytes, resulting in dark spots, age spots, or uneven skin tones becomes even more pronounced during the warmer, sunnier months. We recommend using a vitamin C antioxidant serum like Image Vital C Serum in the mornings to prevent any pesky sunspots.

This can also be mixed with a toner with hyaluronic acid like the Indie Lee COQ-10 toner, which acts like a big glass of water for your skin.

3) Switch out your thicker moisturizer for a lightweight cream-based moisturizer or facial oil. We love Three Ships Squalane Radiance Moisturizer for an affordable smelling moisturizer that is also lightweight. Combine this with Indie Lee's Daily Vitamin Infusion facial oil, which locks in moisture, and you have a winning, easy combo.

About Karen Oettl, Founder of Save Face

Karen Oettl has been pretty obsessed with her customers since the age of 10 or 11 when she would regularly work in her parents' retail store in Burlington, Vermont, selling everything from Birkenstocks to leather jackets. So she learned how to listen and intuitively understand what shoppers were interested in at a very early age.

She officially started Save Face in August 2019 with a simple mission to modernize the facial experience and make daily skincare habits easy, fun, and affordable. Save Face currently pop-ups in co-working spaces, companies & other retail stores in Atlanta, bringing accessible and modern facials to you. Karen is searching for the perfect first brick & mortar storefront for Save Face's debut in 2020.
